Children cope best when the adults are calm, consistent and predictable. What they remember is not the announcement, it is whether life kept working afterwards.

Three messages

  • This is not your fault.
  • We both love you and we both stay your parents.
  • Here is what happens next, in practical terms.

Practical planning

  • Tell them together if you can, and agree the words in advance.
  • Choose a time when there is space afterwards, not just before school.
  • Give concrete detail about where they will sleep and when they see each parent.
  • Tell the school so they can watch for changes.
