In the first two weeks, aim for stability rather than final decisions. Big choices made in the first fortnight are often regretted.

The list

  1. Open a sole bank account and redirect your salary.
  2. Take copies of key financial documents.
  3. Check whether any joint credit can be frozen.
  4. Agree temporary arrangements for the children in writing.
  5. Agree who pays which bills this month.
  6. Register home rights if the property is in your spouse's name.
  7. Change passwords and check shared device logins.
  8. Update pension and life policy nominations.
  9. Tell your GP if you are struggling.
  10. Get an initial view on the divorce route you want to take.
