Filing feels like the big moment, but it is really the start of an administrative sequence. Knowing the order of events removes most of the anxiety.
The sequence
- The court issues your application and sends it to your spouse (service).
- Your spouse files an Acknowledgement of Service, usually within 14 days.
- The 20 week reflection period runs from the issue date.
- You apply for the Conditional Order and a judge checks the paperwork.
- After 6 weeks and 1 day you apply for the Final Order, which ends the marriage.
If your spouse ignores it
Non-response does not stop the divorce. You can prove service in other ways, ask for deemed service, or instruct a process server. It adds weeks, not months, in most cases.
