Lenders do not see your marital status. What they see is joint credit, missed payments and financial association with another person.

What to do

  • Get your credit report from more than one agency.
  • Close or convert joint accounts once balances are cleared.
  • Request a notice of disassociation after the last joint account closes.
  • Keep every payment on time during the divorce, even if money is tight.
  • Register on the electoral roll at your new address.
