Possessions rarely change the financial picture, but they generate a disproportionate share of the arguments and the legal fees.

A workable method

  1. List everything of real value, not everything you own.
  2. Remove items each of you brought into the relationship or inherited.
  3. Take turns to choose from the remaining list.
  4. Value only where there is a genuine dispute, using second hand prices, not insurance values.

Pets

In law a pet is property, so there is no custody order for a dog. Most couples agree who keeps the animal and, if they want, a shared arrangement recorded in writing.

Frequently asked questions

Should the order list contents? ▼

Usually a short clause confirming contents have been divided is enough.

What about a car on finance? ▼

Deal with the finance agreement, not just the vehicle. The lender's consent may be needed.
