Written by CalmSplit Editorial TeamReviewed by Ramani GillLast reviewed 13 August 2026England & Wales

The divorce process is exactly the same however short the marriage, provided you have been married at least one year. Short marriages often have a simpler financial picture, which can make the whole separation quicker to resolve.

CalmSplit prepares your divorce application for a one-off £159 and can also prepare a clean break order where there is little or nothing to divide.

  • You must have been married at least one year to apply
  • The statutory timetable is the same for every marriage
  • A clean break order suits many short marriages

See how it works

The process is unchanged

You confirm the marriage has broken down irretrievably, wait 20 weeks, apply for the Conditional Order, then the Final Order six weeks and a day later. Length of marriage does not alter that timetable.

Finances after a short marriage

  • Assets brought into a short marriage are often treated differently from jointly built assets
  • There may be little to divide, making a clean break straightforward
  • Pensions can still be relevant, particularly if contributions were significant
  • Take independent advice if there is a business or substantial pre-marital wealth

Why a financial order still matters

Even with little to divide, ending the marriage without a financial order leaves claims open. A clean break order records that neither of you can make future claims.

Frequently asked questions

No. The statutory periods apply to all divorces.
